Bayelign Teshager, a 20-year-old from Ethiopia making his marathon debut, won the 35th Los Angeles Marathon Sunday morning, pulling away from Kenya’s John Langat in the final mile for a 2 hour, 8 minute, 25 second victory.

Teshager, who turns 20 Monday, threw in a series of surges toward the bottom of San Vicente Boulevard opening a gap on Langat turned onto Ocean Avenue for the stretch run.

Teshager first gained international attention in 2017 as a member of Ethiopia’s winning team in the World Cross Country Championships junior (Under 20) race, placing 12th individually. His marathon potential was clear after he ran 60:31 for the half-marathon last March. Source: dailynews
