Statement to International Media Covering the AU Summit in Addis Ababa

As you report from Ethiopia during the African Union Heads of State meeting, we urge you to uphold the core principles of journalism: truth‑seeking, independence, and accountability to the public.

While diplomatic events in Addis Ababa draw global attention, communities in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and other regions continue to experience violence, including documented drone strikes and civilian casualties. Failing to investigate and report on these realities’ risks leaving millions of people continue unheard and unseen.

Your presence in Ethiopia is an opportunity — and a responsibility — to shine a light on the full picture of the country’s situation. We call on you to:

  • Seek out verified information about ongoing violence outside Addis Ababa.Speak with affected communities, humanitarian workers, and independent observers.
  • Visit prisons where Journalists, politicians, human rights defenders and thousands of civilians who are unjustly detained for years by the government.
  • Report with accuracy, balance, and courage.
  • Ensure that the suffering of civilians is not overshadowed by leaders meeting and the shining lights in Addis Ababa.

Silence in the face of documented harm is not neutrality — it is neglect of journalism’s ethical duty!
