Genocide Alert:
Looming Genocide in Northern Ethiopia Amhara region
Today, the Council of Ministers of the Government of Ethiopia led by Abiy Ahmed has decided to put the Amhara region under a state of emergency. This means the region will be fully under military command.
It is expected that the government will use heavy artillery, drones, and fighter jets to subdue the resistance in the region.
It is feared that the state of emergency declaration may lead to genocide against the people of Amhara both within the region and in other parts of the country.
We ask the government of Canada and Canadian Members of Parliament to go beyond issuing travel alerts and engage the international community to put the government of Ethiopia on notice against any genocidal action and attack on civilians.
We ask all genocide-preventing organizations to take note of this and do everything in their power to avert this tragedy.
We ask all Ethiopians to take the utmost caution and restrain from anything that could inflame interethnic conflict.
